9 Best places to visit in Croatia for couples
1. Visit Diocletian’s Palace in Split
I have taken many romantic vacations to Croatia and can attest to its beauty.
If you are looking for the best places to visit in Croatia for couples, we have you covered.
The first place you need to visit is Diaoletian’s Palace.
The old town of Split is located inside the walls of the Diocletian’s Palace, and exploring it with your partner is a wonderfully romantic experience.
Head to the Cathedral of St. Dominus first – you will find a very tall observation tower that offers impressive 360-degree city views.
Ascending the stairs to the top of the tower isn’t quite as romantic (bring a bottle of water), but enjoying the views together absolutely is.
In the evening, head to one of the many restaurants on the Splitska Riva (main town promenade).
Grab a romantic dinner while admiring the sunset over the Adriatic Sea.
The most romantic place in Croatia is at sea.
Hopefully, the stench of the sulphur baths isn’t too pungent.
Otherwise, it could spoil the experience a bit.
You can even book a cruise as you see the sun set over Split and enjoy a relaxing time on the water!
It’s downright romantic.
The best place to stay in Split for couples is the Palace Judita Heritage Hotel, Hotel Park Split, and the Bepo Luxury Apartments!
2. Listen To The Sea Organ in Zadar
Zadar is often called the jewel of the Adriatic, and some consider it the prettiest town on the Mediterranean coast of Croatia.
It’s beautiful, and being romantic in such a pretty town comes naturally.
I highly recommend it as it is one of the most romantic places in Croatia.
Be sure to add Zadar to your itinerary, as it is not to be missed.
Head to the edge of the old town, where you will find the Greeting to the Sun and the Sea Organ.
For the Sea Organ to function correctly, it requires waves.
It’s best to visit the site during mid-day as the sea is usually less turbulent in the early morning and late afternoon.
Sit on the steps with your loved one and listen to the magical sounds the sea creates – it’s truly a wonderful experience that will make you fall in love with this gorgeous city.

3. Hike The Trails of Plitvice Lakes National Park
If you do not wish to spend time at the seaside, head to Plitvice Lakes National Park.
It is one of the most romantic places in Croatia and is perfect for couples.
The park boasts easy walking trails and more elaborate hiking trails to explore at your own pace.
You can even stay at one of the guesthouses within the national park, but remember that it is possible to explore all the main trails during a day trip.
If you dedicate a day to this, you can complete it.
A ticket to this national park includes rides on park buses and boats, the latter of which is the most romantic part of the trip.
Cuddle with your partner to shield each other from the harsh lake winds while admiring the breathtaking views.
The Plitvice Lakes National Park is the best and most popular NP in Croatia, full of opportunities for romance.

4. Tour The Ancient Town of Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik is one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Croatia.
It has attracted many celebrity couples, including Beyonce and Jay Z, and Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones – if it’s good enough for them, it’s probably good enough for you.
Even they know that the most romantic places in Croatia are worth exploring.
Dubrovnik’s old town is one of the most magical places in the world.
Walk around the cobblestone alleys, climb the town walls, admire the magical views, and enjoy a romantic dinner in one of the many restaurants offering a beautiful panoramic view at sunset.
You can also ride the Dubrovnik Cable Car to Mout Srd for an unforgettable vista.
It’s one of the best places to go in Croatia for couples!
Also, if you or your partner are fans of the Game of Thrones TV show, you will love it in Dubrovnik.
Tour the town locations that were featured in the popular series while enjoying the panoramic views before your eyes.
5. Go Swimming at Frkanj, On The Island of Love
Frkanj is a peninsula on the island of Rab, locally known as the Island of Love.
The peninsula is best known for its extensive public beach, which is directly opposite the town of Rab and offers a beautiful view of its coastline.
You can get to Frkanj by walking or just riding a kayak or a SUP from the town of Rab.
The Frkanj peninsula boasts hiking trails, secluded coves, and beautiful beaches.
You can often have a small slice of paradise, especially when visiting the island outside the peak tourist season.
The more renowned beaches on the peninsula have restaurants where you can have a drink or enjoy a nice meal while enjoying stunning panoramic views.
An afternoon of fun in the water followed by dinner at sunset sounds like a romantic way to enjoy your time in Frkanj.
6. Admire the Views in Zagreb
Zagreb, Croatia’s capital city, is particularly romantic in winter, both during Advent in December and the Festival of Lights in March.
The Christmas Market in December is a great time to visit because you get to experience this city at its best – adorned with sparkly decorations on every corner, with countless stalls selling mulled wine, hot gin, and delicious food snacks.
If you are looking for the most romantic places to be in Croatia, it’s in winter, ideally during the Christmas holidays.
Or just after Christmas.
I love the holidays, and visiting different countries during this time makes it unique.
The Festival of Lights is also a special event for this city.
A spotlight is (literally) shined on Zagreb’s top landmarks, and you get to see some genuinely magical artworks projected on the Lotrscak Tower, inside the Gric Tunnel, on the building of Croatia’s National Theater, and so much more.
The event usually takes place in mid-March and lasts about a week, so try to visit during that period if you can.
Even if you can’t travel to Zagreb during these events, you can still have a great time filled with romantic experiences.
Ride the funicular to the Upper Town and climb to the top of Lotrscak Tower to experience the city’s best panoramic views.
Walk hand-in-hand around the city’s charming old town, enjoy a candlelit dinner at one of the countless restaurants in the center, or head to Maksimir Park for a romantic picnic.

7. Explore Pula & National Park Brijuni
Istria might be the most romantic region in entire Croatia.
I should say it’s one of the most romantic places in Croatia to visit while on vacation.
It’s right next to the border with Italy, so the cuisine is classic, primarily Italian – think great local wines and delicious homemade pasta with pounds of locally sourced truffles on top.
Pula (and its surroundings) are full of romantic activities and places for couples.
Ancient landmarks, sprawling panoramic views, excellent restaurants, and scenic views of the sea wherever you look are staples in this lovely Istrian city.
Go on a walking tour of the old town, visit the iconic Amphitheater, and don’t miss out on the ancient fortress in the heart of town.
From Fazana (a 30-minute bus drive from Pula), you can easily catch a boat transfer to Brijuni Islands, a national park known for its serene surroundings, breathtaking nature, and archeological remains.
Visit the remains of an ancient Roman Villa, admire the views from the numerous observation points on the island, and walk along Pine Tree Alley for a genuinely memorable romantic experience.
Explore Pula & National Park Brijuni
8. Dubovac Castle in Karlovac
If you enjoy exploring off the beaten path, go to Dubovac Castle in Karlovac.
It’s about an hour’s drive from Zagreb, so you can easily visit the castle if you’re staying for a few days in the capital city.
The ancient castle is open to the public every day except Monday, and the entrance fee is something forgettable, like 2-3 Euros.
This grants you access to the castle’s observation deck, which offers a 360-degree view of Karlovac and its surroundings, the ancient rooms of the castle that are adorned with sculptures, paintings, and period furniture, and a temporary exhibit.
The temporary exhibit changes – when I visited, it was an exhibit from the Museum of Chocolate in Zagreb, and it was terrific.
There’s also a restaurant inside the 13th-century castle, which is incredible.
The fantastic food, atmosphere, and decorations align with the castle’s astonishing history.
Go to Dubovac Castle in Karlovac
9. Tour the Fortresses of Sibenik
Sibenik is one of the larger towns on the Adriatic coast, best known for its fortresses.
The town has four ancient fortresses, each offering an incredible panoramic view of the Adriatic Sea and the many islands from a distance.
The Barone Fortress is perhaps the best one, simply because it offers a detailed exhibit on its history and a café/bar.
It is one of the most romantic places in Croatia for couples to visit while vacationing.
Grab something to drink while sitting beside the fortress walls and enjoying the best panoramic view of the Adriatic Sea!
The old town of Sibenik doesn’t disappoint either.
The least romantic thing about it is that there are a lot of steps to climb – 2,851, to be exact.
But you will barely notice them because the views around you are stunning enough to distract you from gasping for air.
Visit the St. Lawrence Church and Monastery with its charming botanical garden, see the imposing Gothic-Renaissance Cathedral of St. Jacob, and walk along the seaside promenade at sunset to admire the sights of swans chilling on the sea surface.
This is perfect for couples who want a romantic vacation.
Tour the Fortresses of Sibenik!
