Rent a car and drive from Denver to Steamboat, which takes you out of the city and through the mountains on a 3-hour trip.
Take I-70 west to CO-9 in Silverthorne.

CO-9 will take you to Kremmling, where you will turn left at the main stoplight in town onto US-40.
Stay on this through Rabbit Ears Pass until you arrive in Steamboat Springs.

But the pass is kept clear throughout the winter if it’s not snowing.
