Here are the best places to go in Portugal for couples
1. Algarve
Consider going to the Algarve area if you want romantic places in Portugal!
The Algarve region is known for its stunning beaches and many romantic hideaways along the Atlantic Coast.
From secluded beaches and picturesque cliffs to charming coastal towns and hidden coves, the Algarve offers an array of romantic places to create unforgettable moments together.
Visit Carvoeiro, for example, a quaint fishing village where time stood still.
You can stroll on the boardwalk and enjoy some stunning views over the sea together.
Walk until Algar Seco and discover some beautiful rock formations.
Or sit at Miradouro do Hotel Baía Cristal and enjoy the view.
If you want a fun activity in the area, you can visit the Benagil Caves.
Rent a kayak to spend some time on the beach in the cave, or step on board to boat to discover more of this rugged coastline.
You might even see some dolphins along the way.
This is an experience not to be missed!
Tavira is the go-to place if you like to visit a quaint town!
Tavira has a long history; you will even discover a Roman bridge over the river!
From there, it’s only a short walk to the Castle in Tavira, which offers stunning views over the town and the nature reserve Ria Formosa.
You will see the ancient walls of the castle and the nearby church Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo.
Stroll along the Gilão River towards the market to grab a bite to eat.
Or board one of the boats to venture out to Ilha de Tavira.
The island has a super long sandy beach with excellent facilities.
The boat ride crosses Roa Formosa, and you might even spot some flamingos on the way.
After a romantic sunset on the beach, you can enjoy a tasty meal in town.
For the most romantic sunset, though, you should go to Lagos.
During the day, you can enjoy beaches like Praia Dona Ana, Praia do Camilo and Praia de Porto Mós.
And if you like to do some sightseeing, there is plenty to do in the historic centre of Lagos.
Enjoy visiting the Igreja de Santo António church, discovering Forte da Ponta da Bandeira, or walking in Lagos Old Town.
The harbour is a lovely spot to eat, and the Old Town is also filled with cafes, bars and restaurants.
But when it is time for sunset, head over to Ponta da Piedade.
You can go by boat and enjoy the sunset from a sailboat or walk on the boardwalk from the lighthouse to the rock formations.
It might get chilly, so bring a jumper and a bottle of wine, or keep each other warm!
I genuinely believe that Algarve is one of Portugal’s most romantic places!

2. Sintra
Sintra is the second most romantic place in Portugal.
Fairytale palaces and romantic gardens, anyone?
There are not many places more romantic than Sintra!
Nestled amidst the lush green hills of Portugal, Sintra emerges as a dreamlike destination, evoking a sense of enchantment and romance.
And bonus, it’s only 40 minutes from Lisbon!
Sintra offers a magical escape perfect for couples seeking a romantic holiday, and the hotels in this area are just as beautiful as their surroundings!
Remember to venture out and discover some of the most enchanting sites in Sintra!
Couples looking for romantic places in Portugal should indeed visit Sintra!
Quinta da Regaleira is one of the most visited places in Sintra Town.
You will explore its secret passages, hidden caves, and mystical symbolism here.
The extensive gardens are mesmerizingly beautiful and are perfect for a romantic stroll.
The Initiation Well is a highlight for many, and once you’ve walked all steps down, you will enter a maze of tunnels and caves.
It’s probably the most enchanting place in town!
Another highlight for many is Pena Palace.
It’s built atop a hill, and the Portuguese royal family once owned the vibrant palace.
They used it as their summer residence, surrounded by forests and gardens.
Most people will visit the palace interior but don’t forget to take a romantic stroll down the lake.
Pena Palace can be pretty busy in the high season, so if you prefer some alone time with your partner, you might prefer visiting Parque e Palácio de Monserrate.
This 19th-century house has a unique Indian and Moorish style and is surrounded by botanical gardens.
Discover lakes, ruins of a chapel and a beautiful rose garden.
The gardens are the perfect serene backdrop for romantic strolls and picnics.
After all the parks and palaces, watching a sunset on The Atlantic Coast is a great idea.
In less than half an hour, you’ll reach some of the best beaches in Sintra.
Praia da Adraga, Praia Grande, and Praia das Maçãs are easy to get.
And these little towns are filled with restaurants!
What a setting to end your day.
Time to fall all over in love again!
Or in love with Portugal!

3. Évora
With so many romantic places in Portugal, it’s no wonder picking just one spot is hard.
If you’re looking for a picturesque city in the middle of vineyards, Évora is the place to be!
The city is in the heart of Portugal’s Alentejo region, known for its wine.
Take a day trip from Lisbon to the ancient city of Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Be enchanted by the medieval village of Monsaraz and try a local wine.
But before you enjoy a glass of red, white or green wine, it’s worth checking out the area.
Évora Cathedral is one of the highlights in town.
You can visit the church and monastery, but the real treasure is at the top of the cathedral!
Follow the winding staircase to the roof and enjoy a magical view over Évora!
Next to the cathedral, you can visit the Temple of Diana, an impressive Roman ruin and a testament to Évora’s rich history.
If you like archaeological sites, this is a must-stop place.
When it’s time for lunch, Praça do Giraldo is a lively place for a bite to eat.
The square is filled with restaurants serving traditional Portuguese cuisine.
Afterwards, you can take a look at Capela dos Ossos.
This may not be the most romantic place to visit, but a must-see in Évora.
This so-called Chapel of Bones is filled with bones and skulls from monks.
If you prefer to skip this part, the next-door park Jardim Público de Évora is worth your time.
You will also find the Royal Palace of Évora with many art exhibitions.
Around Évora are also many sights to discover.
Almendres Cromlech, for example, is one of the largest and most significant megalithic monuments in Europe.
Wander through the mystical stone circles and enjoy the rustic Alentejo landscape!
It’s finally time to embark on a romantic journey through Alentejo’s renowned vineyards, where you can indulge in wine tastings and vineyard tours.
Évora serves as an excellent base for exploring the Alentejo wine region, where you can savour the rich flavours of local wines and revel in the scenic beauty of vine-covered hills.
Time for a toast!

4. Óbidos
One of the best places to go on holiday in Portugal is Óbidos!
Óbidos is located about an hour and a half from Lisbon and a favourite day trip from the city for many.
The picturesque medieval town is situated on the west coast of Portugal, and a castle wall surrounds the city.
The town is a small labyrinth of narrow streets, alleys, churches and the castle (where you can sleep!).
With its cobblestone streets, ancient walls, and fairytale-like ambience, Óbidos offers one of the best romantic setting
s in the country!
When the flowers bloom, it’s a colourful charm in the Oeste region.
Óbidos was once gifted to the Queen of Portugal, Queen Isabel, and it was a wedding present from King Denis of Portugal.
The castle is located at one end of the village, and you can walk along the castle walls to enjoy the views over the town and the surrounding landscape.
Rua Direita is the main street in Óbidos, where you can find some lovely shops and restaurants.
Try a local Ginjinha de Óbidos; a liquor often served in chocolate cups.
The alcoholic drink contains fruit from the morello trees (gingers) and tastes like cherries.
There are many festivals throughout the year in Óbidos, so maybe you can visit one!
The chocolate festival is usually in March; besides impressive sculptures, you can taste delicious chocolate all day!
If the medieval vibe is more your thing, come in July for the Medieval Festival!
Folio (International Literary Festival of Óbidos), the book fair, happens every October, and December is perfect for visiting the Christmas markets!
Not only is Óbidos one of the most romantic places in Portugal, but it is packed with amazing things to do for couples.

5. Madeira
For the active romantics, Madeira is perfect for you!
The Portuguese island is located in the Atlantic Ocean, and it’s ideal for a romantic getaway for couples seeking a blend of natural beauty and romantic sunsets.
The island is known for its hiking trails, and the viewpoints are out of this world!
Also, the capital Funchal has much to offer, like the Monte Palace Tropical Garden.
The park has windy paths with palm trees, flowers and art.
You will discover a Japanese garden, cascading waterfalls, and a beautiful villa.
You can reach the park by cable car and take a fun ride with the toboggan sleds back down the hills!
Most visitors come to Madeira for its hiking trails.
There are many levadas (irrigation channels) that are easy to follow.
You will discover a unique landscape filled with high mountains, laurel trees, endless waterfalls and greenery!
There are many trails for beginners but also for more experienced hikers.
With 1862 meters, Pico Ruivo is the tallest mountain on the island; this walk, for example, is doable for most people.
Follow this trail during sunset or sunrise for the most spectacular views!
And don’t forget to find other easy hikes on Madeira that are just as breathtaking!
If you want to take it slow, hire a car service and discover some lovely places on the island.
Santana, for example, is known for its A-frame-shaped houses, and in Porto Moniz, you can swim in natural pools, which is always fun.
The best sunsets are on the western part of the island.
Head over to Miradouro do Ponta da Ladeira or Miradouro do Farol da Ponta do Pargo and enjoy another fabulous day in nature!
